Chapter 12

The cave was naturally cool and damp, but the deeper we went into the right passage, the warmer it got. It had that damp heat, as if we were drawing near a sauna or a crowd of warm, sweaty bodies. The faint stench of rotting poultry and blood also grew stronger as the tunnel walls closed tighter around us and forced us into a single-file line.

My hand stayed on my saber as I led the party deeper into the passageway. We stayed cautious and silent, and even Chad wasn’t cracking jokes. There was an expectation that Ukmuq The Imp would be undoubtedly more difficult than anything we’d faced so far, but there was also quiet excitement in the air after we defeated the imps a few minutes earlier. We worked well together, and sometimes teamwork could be enough to make up for the lack of experience.

The passage curved ahead of us, and the clucks and caws weren’t distant echoes anymore. The noises sounded from around the corner, and they blared in my ears loud enough for me to wince. There must have been hundreds of chickens in there.

I looked back at my companions to see if they were ready.

Chad rolled his shoulders and cracked his neck from side to side, like he was pumping himself up for a football game. Yuna nodded and gave me a small, forced smile, and Clear’s eyes were sharp and focused, as if her gaze was ready to lock on prey.

We turned the corner, and the light from Clear’s relic dimmed as torches began to line the walls, but they were more ominous than anything else, almost as if the torchlight was supposed to herald us toward certain doom.

We drew our weapons and followed the clucking deeper into the cave until the passage opened into a chamber large enough to swallow a hockey rink, and its ceiling arched high overhead like a cathedral.

Hundreds of angry, restless chickens, that consisted mostly of roosters, crowded the room, and the walls trembled with their noise as they squawked, clucked, flapped, and screeched in a discordant and deafening chorus. Feathers floated and drifted in the air, and the gore-slick ground was littered with old bones, rotten meat, straw, and loose rocks.

The chickens encircled a makeshift fighting pit in the middle of the chamber like angry spectators, and they squawked as they watched an ongoing fight. Two roosters, one blind in one eye and the other missing half its beak, brutalized each other in front of their audience.

Ukmuq The Imp, also known as the Chicken King, presided over it all.

He was a few inches taller than the imps we’d fought before, but the bounty poster didn’t quite capture how hideous he truly was. The portrait was a kindness to the chief imp.

Ukmuq was as red as blood, and it wasn’t because of his skin, but a lack thereof. Most of his skin had been peeled off to expose muscles that gleamed like raw meat in a butcher’s shop. His
